Far too many young Hoosiers who are LGBTQ and are afraid to publicly live their truth, and that’s because there’s still a risk that coming out could mean a trip to a government-certified therapist who may try to change who they were born to be.
“Conversion therapy” has been debunked by every reputable medical association, and it’s no longer legal in more than 20 states across the nation. This includes Utah, a deeply conservative and religious state.
As of 2018, about 700,000 LGBTQ Americans have experienced some form of “conversion therapy” -- and the consequences of this practice are severe. LGBTQ Americans are eight times more likely to report having attempted suicide and are nearly six times more likely to report high levels of depression after surviving “conversion therapy”.

“Putting a stop to this harmful and detrimental practice can save the lives of countless LGBTQ Hoosiers. Our state has the chance to end this harmful and detrimental practice this year. A person’s sexual orientation or gender identity is not a disease that needs cured. In fact, every major medical and mental health organization in our country has condemned the use of ‘conversion therapy’,” Ford said in a statement. “There is no financial risk to our state government for approving this legislation, so why not do this?”
"We cannot expect our students to feel comfortable in learning about or accepting their sexuality in a state that allows this discredited, harmful practice to continue," Rep. Errington said in a statement Tuesday. "I know Hoosiers in my district who have personally experienced conversion therapy and are seriously concerned about its use on young people today. I believe banning conversion therapy in Indiana is an essential step in protecting and supporting all Hoosiers."
